Customers are reportedly getting free drinks while the coffee giant’s servers are down. Some stores also reportedly are requiring customers to pay in cash.
In a statement, Starbucks announced that the problem stemmed from the “failure during a daily system refresh.”
The outage affected Starbucks stores in the U.S. and Canada.
Shortly after the outage began, a barista at a Starbucks in Los Angeles' Fairfax district told BuzzFeed News the outage began at his store around 4:30 p.m. He said the store received a call from a regional manager advising employees to give away free drinks until the problem was resolved.
The barista did not know when the computers would be fixed or when the stores would stop giving away free drinks. Starbucks' statement on the outage also did not provide additional details on when the problem might be resolved.
Starbucks corporate headquarters did not immediately respond to BuzzFeed News' requests for comment.
