Hikers were enjoying a small trip to the area surrounding Calbuco, a stratovolcano in southern Chile. The forests were lush and the panoramas breathtaking. But then, something unexpected happened.
In just a few seconds, this gorgeous view is going to change dramatically.
On the night of April 22, the Calbuco volcano in southern Chile erupted, sending a pulsing column of dust and ash into the sky. This was the area’s first eruption since 1972. The results were predictably scary, but images of the eruption show an amazingly beautiful display of color in the night sky.
