Friends identified the man as 19-year-old Tony Robinson.
Madison Police Chief Mike Koval said during a news conference that the shooting happened after officers responded to reports of a man “jumping in and out of traffic, dodging cars and the like.” Police also received a report that the same man had been involved in a battery.
When the first officer arrived at an apartment the suspect had entered he heard what “sounded like a disturbance coming from within the home,” Koval said. The officer then forced his way into the apartment, Koval said, where the teen assaulted the officer.
Koval said the officer shot and killed the teen in the “context” of “mutual combat.”
According to Koval, the officer performed CPR after the shooting but the man later died at a hospital. He did not appear to be armed.
“The initial finding at the scene did not reflect a gun or anything of that nature that would have been used by the subject,” Koval said.
The officer suffered an injury to his head that was treated at a local hospital. The state Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation will handle the investigation of the shooting, Koval said.
When reached for comment Friday night, Madison police would not immediately provide details to BuzzFeed News about the shooting.
